These funky soulful white girls kill me, man, I’m a sucker for them. Back in October it was Kimbra who stole my heart.
Today it’s Detroit’s Rai Knight.
“New New” – Rai Knight
I’m a bit late to the party (“New New” was released on April 30, 2010), but a little late is better than never at all. Like the spunky songstresses that have paved the path Knight follows, she’s not reinventing the wheel or white girl soul. But she inhabits her voice and on-record persona well, selling her “oh shit’s” with a just enough sexiness and coloring to make the notes stick (her rap-cadence-inflected-singing reminds me a bit of Janelle Monae with less range and power). The beat is fantastic retro fun that would’ve sounded right at home on Cee-Lo’s latest offering. Play this one as New York thaws out, the days get longer, and the temperature creeps up to shorts weather–I know I will.
