Photos from Calvaire – Fabrice Du Welz, 2004. I didn’t like Calvaire much when I first saw it, but it certainly has grown on me in the intervening years. Du Welz’s film is highly atmospheric, light on action packed narrative or jump scares. It is a world infested by eerie, unbalanced characters, a world governed by rules so far from normal human rationality that it is almost incomprehensible on first viewing. Though not particularly gruesome, some moments are sure to unsettle. Not the pinnacle of the horror renaissance that happened in France in the middle of the decade, but certainly an unnerving viewing experience.
