Photos from A Prophet (Un Prophete) – Jacques Audiard, 2009. Another incredible film I had the privilege of seeing at the Telluride Film Festival. Tahar Rahim delivers a subtle powerfully performance as Malik, the young man who enters jail with only a name and an assertion of innocence. It’s like the French version of The Wire–not merely for its gritty street content, but rather for its impeccable accuracy (it’s so truthfully rendered, it has forced the French government to reform the French prison system). Audiard creates a stunningly real world that moves slowly at times but never loses its pulse or grip on the audience. Compelling to the end and surprisingly uplifting. It doesn’t arrive in US theaters until February. Mark your calendar.
