A couple years ago I was introduced to Daniel Merriweather via Mark Ronson’s album Versions. His cover of “Stop Me” (originally “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before” by the Smiths) was on repeat for months and has reached unskippable status for me–it comes on I gotta listen.
Naturally, I spent 2008 searching for Daniel Merriweather tunes with little success. But lo, a light on the horizon! Love & War will be released on October 6th!
I’ve actually had the album for a few months now (the import is available currently). As far as debuts go, this is a pretty spectacular one. There are very few weak songs and for fans of Stevie Wonder and Beatles-influenced white boy soul, this is a must. I’m a big supporter of the revivalist soul sound being crafted by Mark Ronson on albums like Love and War and Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black. Ronson’s a talented producer who really doesn’t get the love that he should. He and Raphael Saadiq have been the torchbearers in the last few years for a movement to bring classic soul back to the masses. I’m hoping it works.
BONUS: Raphael Saadiq’s 2008 single “100 Yard Dash,” the best single of 2008 that you never heard. And the video is fly, but sadly not embeddable. Well worth a click 3 and a half minutes of your time.
