WHY? can’t I get enough of Yoni Wolf

I enjoyed my first listen to the genius that is Yoni Wolf, of Bay Area label, anticon fame about a year and a half ago when I was recommended to listen to what was his group WHY?’s third album, Alopecia. Twenty months later–yup, I’m still listening to it, close to, if not daily; in addition to also listening to his newer album that was recorded during the Alopecia sessions. And yet, I still remained flabbergasted by the sheer originality and creativity spawned by just one single member of the tribe (Jew). His lyrics are like a mixture between the typewriter poetry of Bob Dylan, and the spoken word flow of Adam Yauch (MCA of the Beastie Boys), “In Berlin I saw two men fuck
in the dark corner of a basketball court. Just a slight jangle of pocket change pulsing”. His sound–simply put, innovative.

Anticon, an avant-garde collective of white hip-hop heads is at times the perfect home for the man’s genius, and at other times, the furthest thing from what Wolf is doing. His latest album, Eskimo Snow, he describes as the least hip-hop thing he’s ever done. As he pushes the boundaries of his musical creativity, he branches further and further away from what must seem to be the only musical home he has. As he continues to roam underneath both the underground hip-hop and indie rock radars, Yoni Wolf continues to make music for his fans and himself. Now, I don’t know about you, but that’s all I could ever ask from a modern day musical artist. I only pray he won’t be discovered by the next ad agency hired to do the newest iPod commercial, or Degrassi’s new replacement for Drake before I get to finally see him in October. If you’re looking for something new and different from anything else you’ve been burdening your ears with this long summer–please, do yourself a favor. The album’s called Alopecia. The band’s called WHY? Check em’ out.
